Eye Safety Tips for The Pool

The Argus Headquarters is located in Tampa, Florida, so you know it’s hot here! We’re in our swimming pools almost all year round. If you have a swimming pool, it’s important to protect your eyes. Check out our pool safety tips!

Get A Good Pair Of Goggles

Have you ever had chlorine get in your eyes? Yes, it burns. However, that sting isn’t from the chlorine, it’s from a compound called chloramine. According to the CDC, “chloramination is the process of adding chloramine to drinking water to disinfect it and kill germs.”

In a nutshell, chloramine forms when the chlorine in the pool reacts with any of the dirt or oils from your body. Sounds gross, doesn’t it? The chlorine is what kills the harmful bacteria allowing you to swim. The stinging from the chlorine goes away shortly, but you can avoid it by wearing goggles.

Get goggles that fit well so that they can form a good seal over your eyes. If you wear glasses or contacts, ask your optometrist about prescription goggles.

Take Your Contact Lenses Out

If you plan on wearing goggles, take your contact lenses out. They act as petri dishes, trapping little microorganisms into your cornea. These germs can lead to infection and even permanent blindness.

Another danger with contact lenses is that they fall out or get lost. Good luck trying to find a lost contact underwater. You’re better off leaving your contact lenses or going between goggles and glasses.
