Happy National Chocolate Chip Day!
If you’re bored and not sure what to do, bake cookies! It’s National Chocolate Chip Day and who doesn’t love a warm cookie right out of the oven? Unfortunately, sugar isn’t good for your teeth. If you can, use unsweetened chocolate chips and healthier alternatives to flour.
How Sugars Attack Your Teeth
Bacteria lives in your mouth. Some of the bacteria form a sticky material called plaque on the surface of the teeth. When eating a cookie, the bacteria turns into acids. These acids are powerful enough to dissolve the hard enamel that covers your teeth. Ever wonder how cavities form? That’s it.
Supposedly, research shows that chocolate can actually be good for teeth. Dark chocolate, with at least 70 percent cocoa, has health benefits for your teeth. Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants, which helps fight gum disease.
It’s also high in tannins, which prevents bacteria from sticking to your teeth.
As always, take care of your teeth after having a slice of cake. Rinse your mouth out with water and brush and floss thoroughly.
Clean Teeth on National Chocolate Chip Day!
Every dentist will tell you that brushing is an important part of your dental care. To have a healthy mouth and smile, the American Dental Association recommends:
- First and foremost, brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush.
- Second, replace your toothbrush every three or four months.
- Third, make sure to use an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
- Talk to your local dentist about what types of dental products you should be using. If you see the ADA Seal, that tells the product has met their criteria for safety and effectiveness.
