With another St. Patrick’s Day come and gone, you probably have a lot of leftover corned beef and cabbage. Did you know that pickled foods like corned beef or sauerkraut are not good for your teeth?
Corned beef has high concentrations of sugar and acid from the ingredients involved in pickling. It is also high in cholesterol, saturated fat, and sodium.
With the leftovers, people make corned beef sandwiches.
Foods like bread can be as harmful to the teeth as candy. Starches made from white flour are simple carbohydrates and can linger in your mouth and then break down into simple sugars. Bacteria feed on these sugars and produce acid, which causes tooth decay. Avoid having a lot of corned beef sandwiches and brush afterward.
If you decided to celebrate with some corned beef, carry a piece of sugarless gum with you or rinse your mouth out afterward.
