It’s National Hand Washing Awareness Week

washing your hands in the sink

Did you know that the first week of December is National Hand Washing Awareness Week? Not only is hand washing important for your overall hygiene, but for dental too.

As a kid, your mom emphasized keeping your hands clean. Clean hands help prevent sickness, so it’s important to learn the basics of hand washing.

National Hand Washing Awareness Activities

  • Do it right. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Get a good lather between your fingers and under your nails.
  • Remember the five steps. Teach your kids to “wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry.”

If soap and water aren’t readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. However,

  • Sanitizers don’t get rid of all germs.
  • Hand sanitizers may not be effective when your hands are greasy and dirty.
  • Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from your hands.

Hand washing does hand-in-hand with brushing your teeth, get it? There are enough germs in your mouth as is, no need to add more by sticking dirty hands in there.

change your toothbrush after you're sick

Replace your toothbrush after a cold, flu, or an infection. Germs can hide on your toothbrush bristles and lead to re-infection.
