Prevent Dental Emergencies this Summer

It’s summertime! And with the season comes lots of swimming, outdoor sports and other playground activities. While these activities are fun, they can sometimes result in a dental injury. Parents can be prepared for these types of accidents by following these tips:

Make sure your children follow the “pool rules.”

Running on slippery pool decks, diving into shallow waters or bumping the pool ledge can result in children chipping or knocking a tooth loose.

Know how to react once a dental injury has occurred.

Getting to the dentist right away is important, but there are things you can do yourself to help. Use warm water and cold packs first, to clean the area and reduce swelling.  Use gauze to stop any bleeding and use salt water or milk to keep the mouth moist on the ride to the dentist.

Pack an emergency dental care kit.

Items to include are a handkerchief, gauze, a small container with a lid, ibuprofen and your dentist’s contact information.

By following these oral health tips for summer, your kids can start the school year with great oral hygiene.
