Take Advantage of Water Quality Month

Water is hands down the best thing you can drink for your overall and dental health. With August being National Water Quality Month, educate yourself on where your water comes from and how you can preserve it. Educating yourself, your friends and family, can ensure that the water continues to be high quality.

How Water Improves Your Smile

First, it helps keep your mouth clean. Drinking water does not replace brushing and flossing, but it can help wash away food particles and keep your saliva levels high. Drinks such as juices or sodas can leave unwanted sugar behind your teeth that can later result in cavities.

Secondly, it strengthens your teeth. In some countries, tap water contains added fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral known for being effective at preventing cavities and tooth decay. The right amount of fluoride in your water can help strengthen your teeth.

Finally, it helps prevent dry mouth. Your saliva is 99% water! If you don’t drink water regularly, you can get dry mouth. Dry mouth is a condition in which the salivary glands don’t produce enough saliva to keep your mouth wet, and it can cause you to have difficulties chewing or swallowing.

What About Sparkling Water?

It’s important to note that any drink with carbonation, including sparkling water, has a higher acid level.

Citrus-flavored waters often have a higher acid level which increases the risk of damage to your enamel. Plan on having just one glass instead of multiple so as not to expose your teeth to so much acid.

Water with fluoride helps fight cavities, washes away leftover food and even keeps your mouth from becoming dry.

Some sparkling water brands add sugar. Watch what you’re drinking because a sugar-sweetened beverage risks you developing cavities.

When in doubt, drink regular water.
